With five children in school and activities, I buy a lot of thank-you gifts every December: for teachers, coaches, bus drivers, neighbours and the friends who invite us over. Over the years I've learned what people really appreciate. It isn't another mug. It's something small, pretty and genuinely useful, or a treat they can enjoy right away.
Here are my favourite teacher and host gifts under $40, plus a few easy pairings.
Treats to share
- Québec Caramel Gift Box: La Classique ($35). Hand-made caramel spreads in original, maple syrup, cocoa and fleur de sel, plus a milk chocolate caramel bar. It feels special, it's proudly Canadian, and it's perfect for a staff room or a host's kitchen counter.
Little luxuries
- Spa in a Box ($35.99). Six handmade self-care treats in one box: soap, a small soy candle, lip balm, facial scrub, scrubbies and a shower puck. Teachers give so much of themselves; this says "take a moment for you".
Useful and pretty for the kitchen
Hosts appreciate anything that makes the clean-up easier after a big meal.
- Ganong Red Wrap Tea Towel ($22). An organic cotton tea towel celebrating the Maritime Christmas chocolates. A cheerful, uniquely Canadian host gift.
- Beeswax Food Wraps, 3-pack ($12.99). Small, medium and large wraps for leftovers, cheese and bread. Handy after any holiday dinner.
- Swedish Dishcloths (6-pack $16). Absorbent, quick-drying cloths that can replace a lot of paper towel.
Easy pairings
| Pairing | Good for | Approx. total |
|---|---|---|
| Tea towel + beeswax wraps | Hosts, neighbours | $35 |
| Beeswax wraps + Swedish dishcloths | Teachers, coaches | $29 |
| Caramel gift box on its own | Teacher teams, office hosts | $35 |
| Spa in a Box on its own | A teacher who went above and beyond | $36 |
Tips for teacher gifts
- Check school guidelines. Some schools have limits on gifts or food. When in doubt, choose a non-food gift.
- Group gifts go further. A few families together can give a larger gift, such as the caramel box plus a spa box for the staff room.
- Add a note from your child. A few handwritten words matter more than the price tag.
Questions
Are the caramels suitable for people with allergies?
Please check the ingredient and allergen list on the package before giving or eating. If you're unsure about someone's allergies, a non-food gift is the safer choice.
When should I order?
Order by December 5 for Christmas delivery across Canada.
