A Simpler, Plastic-Free Laundry Routine for Big Families

Natural wool dryer balls for a plastic-free laundry routine

With seven people in our house, the laundry never really stops. Most laundry rooms slowly fill up with heavy jugs, sticky measuring caps and boxes of dryer sheets. A plastic-free routine is lighter, tidier and much easier to keep stocked.

It comes down to three simple swaps: before the wash, in the wash and in the dryer.

Before the wash: a solid stain bar

Grass knees, spaghetti sauce, grubby collars. Treating stains first makes the biggest difference.

How to use: wet the stain, rub the bar in to make a light lather, work it into the fabric, let it sit for a few minutes on tough stains, then wash as usual. Test delicate fabrics on a hidden spot first.

In the wash: laundry detergent sheets

Laundry detergent sheets are pre-cut, concentrated sheets that dissolve in the wash. No jug, no pouring, no drips down the side of the machine. They work in every machine type and water temperature. Follow the dosing directions on the package, and keep them out of reach of children, like any detergent.

In the dryer: wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets

Wool dryer balls tumble with your clothes, helping to soften fabrics and separate laundry so warm air moves through it. They're reusable for a long time and replace single-use dryer sheets.

Load size How many dryer balls
Small 2
Medium to large 3
Large (towels, bedding) 6

Tip: for a light scent, add a few drops of essential oil to one ball and let it dry before using it.

All in one place

The Fresh Laundry Kit brings these together so you can start the whole routine at once.

Questions

Do wool dryer balls reduce static?

Over-drying causes most static, especially with synthetic fabrics. Taking clothes out as soon as they're dry helps; dryer balls help clothes dry more evenly.

Do detergent sheets work in high-efficiency (HE) machines?

Yes. They're made to work in all machines and water temperatures.

Are the stain bars safe on all fabrics?

They work on most washable fabrics. Always test silk, wool and delicate fabrics on a hidden area first.
